Thanks for the note, I agree it would be liberating to not hold onto these things, that's why it's a major goal in my life.

The problem I have with ultimatums (ie. take your stuff back by this date or else it gets trashed) is that both of these people are living in other states and have no money. So I know that they can't take anything back at this time. So I don't think that setting a deadline would do any good.

You said it yourself in December 2007
"It is also liberating to get rid of other types of things, like: unwanted responsibilities"
In my opinion, Friend A needs an ultimatum now and Friend B can have a bit of leeway but needs an ultimatum fairly soon. You need to consider your relationship with your landlord. But that's easy for me to say!

[...] Personal stuff was difficult. Tried to keep only what was truly valuable and non-replaceable. Started this process, but reached a point where I could not decide if something was a treasured memento or picked up at a garage sale (because it wasn’t my stuff!) Without his input, the project stalled. Gave up on it last May.
Well, I couldn't find a garden storage cabinet big enough at the local big box stores. I could order one online, but I'm sour on the idea now.

To do this I'll have to spend $200-300, bring it home and assemble it. Then spend a couple weekends of labor hauling it in my car from the storage unit (which is in another town) to the house. Not willing to go through all that effort for someone else's stuff.

Getting another friend or family member to take them is probably the best solution.

Yep, go for it, especially if you will saving that monthly cost after a few months. Alternatively, does your friend (box owner) have any other good friends in the area that you could ask to take them instead?

The renovations sound like they would be pretty intense...and always cost more than you think. Probably not a good idea unless it´s an absolute giveaway to start with!

Aside from what I wore and a jacket, I brought:

hat
shirt
fleece pullover
iPod
cell phone
camera
comb
toothbrush
and a messenger bag to carry them.

I had chargers for the gadgets but didn't need them. Never have I brought so little on a trip, and could have brought less.
